Trip to India is always exciting. Book the tickets a year in advance and when the time comes you forget about it. The roommates remind you since they have to send some stuff with you. You buy a ton of chocolates, and get the never ending list from your folks.
All the excitement dies once you reach the airport, since its so hot & humid that you feel like taking the flight back. You yell at the driver thinking he is going on the wrong side of the road and, crib about the traffic and how people never followed the rules. Well, you were one of them before. All the chocolates are a waste since it melted and now your have all brown clothes and they match perfectly.
You meet up with your friends wearing a Banana Republic T shirt but your friend shows up wearing a Armani. Girls switch to Shalwar for some weird reason. You get a call and you answer it on your free phone you got in the US, but your friend pulls up his 3G iPhone. Looking at your phone he offers his now old 1st gen iPhone. You saw this coming when you sent him pics of your new (used) car and he responded with his new (brand new) car which cost twice as much.
You sit and calculate in dollars at any price you see and say its too expensive, but your counterparts think its worth it. Your realise that the trip is getting un-affordable now and is just plain inconvenient.By the time you blink your trip comes to an end and you take the flight back. This time its better, since only half of your suitcase is filled with kitchen stuff.
A week later you get a call from the same friend as he is here on a project, is planning to switch companies and settle down. You spent 3 years plus $30,000 to be at where you are right now. He just played it the easy way and is at the same place where you are right now minus all the loans. Don't you look plain stupid now?
Not according to me. Once you came to the US, you realize the value of money and how to spend or save it. You earn it and don't want to take money from your folks. You are independent and know what choices to make in life. You enjoyed your school life, made new friends and enemies. You struggled, and succeeded. Well worth the ride!
