Just a day back, I heard about a train crash in California where, the cause suspected was that the Engineer was actually, text messaging on a cell phone. What? How can a person operating a train be so irresponsible. Its like a pilot talking on the phone. Saying, "Honey, I'm taking off to London as we speak".
And now there is news about how the crash could have avoided using a system, which is going to be out when you are close to holding a walking stick. Why is that even a news, in the first place? The Media writes crap just to get the viewers attention. It did work though.
California recently outlawed using cellphones while driving. That is, without a hand's free. So, expect this law in your state anytime soon. Chicago has had the rule for a long time, but even the cops don't follow them. So what the hell. Its not only talking on the cellphone that diverts your attention. There is a host of other things. Looking at an Ad, hot girl/guy/car/bike, eating, accident on the side (caused since the guy was looking at the hot girl in the ad while eating), beautiful scenery, etc.
In fact, you can be distracted by looking at the traffic signs or lights too. So in the end, everything in the vicinity of the road is a distraction. So if California decides to remove everything within 100 miles of a road, then there would be only one road running from North to South and that's it. And only one person can drive on it, so that he is not distracted by anybody else. In the end, he is going to get bored because there is nothing to look at, then fall asleep and crash anyway.
Well, as compared to a cellphone, nothing else pretty much takes your attention for more than a second or two (except eating of course). So its irrelevant. That's why they don't want you to use a cellphone, or eat while driving. The conversation could last as long as your drive. Texting is even worse. Not only is attention diverted, but the hands and eyes are off, from where it should be.
If you do talk on the cellphone, you are as risky as the Engineer who was on the train. I have noticed that, when you are on the phone. Along with my attention, my speed also decreases. I end up being a safer driver or else, I would have been zig-zagging and everyone would be swearing at me. So, the phone, actually helps me and others on the road.
It all boils down to this. Some people can multi-task this very well, whereas the rest simply can't. So if you can't, just hang up and drive!
