Another Oscar post?

I owe one post for the Oscar's that A.R.Rahman (or Rahmeen, the way Oprah wants to call him) won. It wasn't much of a surprise for me as I was pretty confident that he would. More due to the fact that he had three nominations.

A lot of Indians tuned in to watch the Oscars for the obvious reason. I am sure all the people from Slumdog were pretty excited to be on the Red Carpet. The interviews on the Red carpet were going on as usual. All the celebrities giving details about what they were wearing and why the dress is not as ridiculous as it looks. Next, camera pan to the Slumdog team. They had to zoom out thanks to twenty odd people standing there, with Anil Kapoor jumping like a mad man in between. I mean, we had to prove that India was crowded.

The kids were way beyond excited. One of them was too shocked to even talk. He was just dumbfolded with all the glitz and glamour. Though everyone was chiming in, Irfan Khan was at the back and didn't talk. He was trying to, but looked like a deer caught-in-headlights. Rahman wasn't part of this crowd. He decided to come in separately. But no one knew whom he was, so he had to walk on the Red carpet without being questioned on what he was wearing. Rahman broke tradition by not wearing a Black tie suit. 

This time the Oscars was a little bit different. The stage normally is at a elevated level, but this time it seemed like it was in the basement, with people having to look down. And rather than showing the nominees on TV, they showed them live. Songs were performed live. Normally the nominees are focused no camera and all of them had to put up a happy face and clap gracefully. This time the actors who were nominated were brought to the stage and displayed like models. it reminded me of beauty pageant contests. 

The moment had come and Rahman had won the Oscar and made a speech by thanking everyone and said a few words in Tamil. Even after he won, he was calm. And for the second award he said something about choosing love or hate, which I think has a deeper meaning than how it sounds. Another special mention to Resul Pookutty who won the award for the best sound engineer. He got washed by all the hype around Rahman and Slumdog. I was happy to know that Sukhwindhar 'Gay' Singh wasn't able to make it. No doubt his performance is nothing short of electrifying, but his mannerisms are pretty embarassing. On a show like Oscars, its better unexplored.

Slumdog also won the best movie. With this every nutcase who were complaining about Bombay being in a bad light, can shut them selves up. These are the kind of people who will never be happy for others, and have to disapprove on anything and everything. This actually shed light on the reality of Bombay which I never knew existed even now. What everyone doesn't know is, Rahman and Pookutty aren't the first Indian's to have won Oscars. A costume designer had won an Oscar way back in 1982. Rahman still holds the record for two Oscars. He is the 4th person in the world to have won a double Oscar. The only competition to him, is himself. Rahman's music has soul, which one cannot find elsewhere.

What winning also meant was, Anil Kapoor again jumping like a mad man on the stage. I am sorry, I meant basement. He was the second one to arrive on stage (again basement), after the award presenter. Regardless, this is an achievement which was long due for Rahman. Jai ho is very very average as compared to his other songs. If the Oscar fraternity had heard to the rest of his songs, Rahman would be paying for excess baggage.
