We have come a long way in terms of technology. Today's cellphone can do almost everything a computer can. TV has gone from Saturn sized boxes to as thin as my wallet. From Gramophone records to tapes to CD's to LD's to DVD's to Blue-Ray's. One can sit at home and video conference with the idiots in Russia. My shoe can talk with my iPod to tell me how pathetically I ran. The list just goes on.
In all this chaos, one technology has survived to live even today. The Radio. AM radio is not dead yet. There still a lot of channels on it. AM was started at around 1906 and FM took was launched in the sixties. FM has better quality than AM and other significant advantages. There are tons of FM channels in the US. One frequency could have different stations in different suburbs.
In India until a decade back, there was only Doordarshan playing on the entire band spectrum. One could hear this only in road side tea stalls. Half of the people did not see the need of a system to have the radio option. Just like the pirates in the Indian ocean, the industry bigwigs attacked this mode of entertainment as they saw great potential in it. People now hardly play Indian music in their cars. They would rather listen to the FM for variety in music.
In the initial stages when the general public were not aware that radio always meant doordarshan, was rather entertaining. The RJ's wouldn't get any calls, this meant that the RJ's colleague would call, pretending to be a common man to keep the show going on. Later few actual people called, but it became so frequent that the RJ's could in fact recognize their voices. Some I guess, would have made dinner plans over the air too.
Lets go back to the US now. Every station in the morning have some sort of morning talk show playing. They hardly play any music. The stations just pick up a bunch of lunatics like Bush and tell them to keep yapping in their studios. And later give out the number so all the listeners can chime in on their discussion too.
Though some stations do talk about interesting topics, others just want to kill time talk crap. For instance this one RJ encouraged girls to call him. And he would take guesses on their panty size. Live. To my surprise he was bombarded with calls. I don't exactly see one purpose in this sort of guessing and nor was he good at it. There are other stupid topics, but I guess they were too lame to remember.
The people who call are even more weird than the RJ's themselves. They call and mention they went to jail like it was their in-laws house. No regret whatsoever. Most of them are either divorced or having an affair, or both. I sometimes wonder how on earth can they give their real names and be so sure that someone they know is not listening to it.
All this while I have been wanting to write about this, but held myself back from ripping it apart. This morning's topic made this subject a top priority on my list. And what were they talking about? Threesomes!
